Pushing the snowdrops

Following on from last week on this post I will be showing how I used the Gelpress plate with lino to produce more prints in a different way and also how to use water soluble crayons too.

I like to push an idea and take it further and this is not exception.

I line up my materials:-
Mangle, Gelpress plate, Lino block, acrylic paints, water soluble crayons and oil pastels, baby wipes, paper and water spray

Now Im ready to go.....

Watch the VIDEO here

FIrst the Gelpress plate.

I chose my colours.  Dark and light blue and a green and rolled out a thin layer and pressed the lino block into the wet paint

Apply even pressure to ensure that all the surfaces have taken the paint

I then put the block onto the press (converted from an old mangle - see previous post with video) and placed the paper over the top and covered with card and cloth and ran it through the press.  You can of course hand burnish the prints or use a wooden spoon too

The prints always come out nice and crisp and depending on where you place your colours always very unique and interesting.

I repeat the process.

I also use pre printed mono prints to print on creating another very different look.  In this case very soft and romantic.

This way the lino block will almost have a never ending life (Be aware though that Lino does have a life and will eventually crumble)

Watch the VIDEO here

You can of course pull many prints off the gel plate directly having pressed the lino block into the paint.  This gives yet another look that can be worked on later.

Next I use water soluble crayons and water-soluble oil pastels (yes a weird concept but they do exist).  These I love as they are so easy to use and they blend well together too

Water soluble pencils both the regular kind or Inktense are another alternative and the results are more permanent as the Inktense are ink based.  All these work beautifully  and create yet another look

I rub the colours that I want onto the block, in this case taking care of choosing colours to match the subject.

I then lightly spritz with water and lay the block on the press.  The water loosens the pigment which then transfers to the paper.  You can also play with spraying the paper with water.  Cover with paper and card and cloth and card again and roll through the mangle.

I result is more subtle than the acrylic but effective none the less and this can be altered depending on the amount of pigment you put on the block.  The paper can also be a major factor in changing the look of the print.

Practice and push the  limits and see what you can come up with.

This little one I printed directly into a sketch book...works perfectly and can be enhanced later if I want to.
                                                                                                    Watch the VIDEO here

I haven't finished with the lino block yet...so watch this space for the last part

Inspired by Art

Having fun playing with my Gel Press plates again this weekend and have set aside a new blog post step by step for April 20th for World Earth day which will be a blog hop where you can win a Large Format Round plate from Gel Press so keep an eye out for that.

In preparation for that I was playing around getting ideas for it and the ideas kept flowing. This one is inspired by Monet,

I will post the other ones after embellishment after the Blog Hop;

I have discovered one thing whilst doing all this printing on the Gel Press Plates...I do love it but I love an instant result too.  As I am not a "art journaller per se" (and I do so admire those that are) I cannot see myself cutting out bits n pieces to use in a book or journal.  I paint. I paint pictures mostly in watercolour and therefore I like to produce paintings........so that is what I am going to strive for mostly from this process.

As so many people have requested a video showing how I create my small poppy landscapes I have just finished filming a simple landscape routine which I will be publishing later this week.

In the meantime I have decided I want to run "Inspired by my favourite artist" every month and will deliver the final print on my blog.  I think it is important to study other artists famous or not as it expands our knowledge of techniques, mediums and colours too.  Also the way that those worked before us set certain styles in motion which became the fabric of all the art movements.

So this month I am working on a huge favourite of mine and may do more of his....that was a big hint!!!!

Can you see who the artist is yet????

More to come soon

Fresh Air?

Spent nearly the whole of last week pretty much locked  in my very "underused in the winter" Studio as I took delivery of 14 different sized Gel Press Plates from Gel Press in the US on Tuesday. So not alot of fresh was had!!! A shock as I only had to wait 3 days and was thrilled when the box arrived jammed packed with goodies.

As part of my  role as a Creative Designer for the Team I need to play with each Gel Press Plate and see what I can come up with and my head is swimming with ideas.

So Tuesday was spent prepping the area in the Studio for my marathon session including lighting the stove on Wednesday and Thursday as it was pretty cold out there and the room takes a good while to warm up.

Somebody else wanted to join me in the warm studio, but at this point, covered in cobwebs, didnt gain entry. But managed to later and left a paw print or two.

I decided that I wanted to work on the 10x8 Gel Press plate as that was a bit larger than what I am used to.  Effectively it is just a wee bit smaller than an A4 sheet of paper as you can see from the image below.

For warming up I just added a few blobs of acrylic paint on the plate and smoothed them out with the brayer and textured the surface with some home made stamps and bubble wrap took a first pull and then added the dragonfly masks and some blue green paint rollered over the top

I next planned some landscapes that I had been storing in my "to do" file. And these were the outcome after embellishment

I like instant results so this method suits me well.  One of my favourites is below!

***TOPTIP***
My advice is go for a subject that you love...if you try to create something you do not like it will show in the finished work.

My Bonnie lies over the ocean
I shall be doing a landscape video very soon, so follow me here on this blog and on Gel Press Junkies for the latest updates from me and my Gel Press Creative Team mates..

I hope to launch my website this week so that you can see some Gel Press prints that were created in this session under Recent Work and my other work.

Please feel free to ask questions and leave a comment

Thats it for now

Bixxy Nash - Creative Designer

Today I can officially announce that I am to be part of a team for an American based company called Gel Press as a Creative Designer amongst others with the same role. The great thing is that we all use similar tools but we produce very different work.  So this really is art that YOU create and will always be unique.

Its all exciting!

So my Gel plate printing in the last couple of years has paid off and I hope now to move forward with the craft and develop many more techniques and already my head is swimming with inspiration and ideas.

This is the facebook page for Gel Press Junkies so pop over there every so often to see what has been created by the team and other members.

Recent work

So join me on my journey and please feel free to comment at anytime and I will endeavour to answer your questions.

These past few weeks has seen me busy with a miriad of things including the building of a new website and updating some old footage of videos etc.

Qatar
I also joined a group on Facebook called Everyday in February which is a sketching group.

Peru
A new years resolution of "i must do more sketching in more creative ways" has resulted in my getting the above job on the team, by giving me the confidence to "go for it".

This has been great for me as I also used gel printed papers that were in my "what do i do with these" box and sketched over them.  The theme this month was world travel and we given a different country per day to visit.  Here are some of mine on the Printed papers.
I selected each sheet based on the coloring of the scene that I had in mind or maybe just the national colours of the country from their flag.  I then worked round that.
Sweden

I used Micron tip pens to do the drawing and Tombow pens (brush felt tip style pens) for alot of the bright bits and watercolour in the lighter areas where the paint could take.

Oman
Of course you really could go mad and do collage and decoupage ontop using stamps of the countries and other souvenirs and memorabilia.

This is definately something I will be doing for my travel journals and will update you on these when I start.

So will all this going on....the holiday bookings are still coming in and I am looking forward to this season.

If anyone is interested in a Gel Press workshop please mail me on info@francepaintingholiday and I can give you some more information

I will end it here and be back in a few days with more.....
